NEW DELHI: It was a golden opportunity
for
victims
of cyber
squatting and for those with patriotic zeal in India, Inc.
Representatives of leading corporate houses including the Tata
Group, Bharti, HCL, MRF, TVS and media houses on Thursday queued up for
certificates of .in registration with a common chorus.
"It gives us
Indian
identity
in cyberspace
which we are proud of." Minister for communication and
information technology, Dayanidhi Maran presented the certificates of .in
registration.
.in is the official Internet domain of India. For
Bharti's Sunil Mittal the registration makes the Airtel brand more authentic as
the airtel.com domain name is registered with some entity in Spain.
Gopal Srinivasan of TVS attributed the .in registration to an
"emotional feel good" gesture while Moser Baer's Deepak Puri whose products
already carry "Made with Pride in India" logo it is a further endorsement of a
global Indian success story.
Owners of registered
Indian
trademarks or service marks
have been given time upto January 21 to
register the .in domain name. After a silent period upto February 16, the
registrations would be open to general public.
Many registrars are
expected to be appointed by the government by then. For the present, there are
four authorised registrars --Direct1, Good Luck Domains, Net4India Limited and
Online NIC.
The .in registry has been created by the National
Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) promoted by the Department of Information
Technology in association with the Internet Service providers Association of
India.
A new policy for
dispute resolution in tune with global practices is being fashioned. Some domain
names in the government, military, educational and R&D sectors are reserved.
The registry services provider, Afilias India, contributed part of
the registration proceeds -- Rs 10,00,000 to the Prime Minister's relief fund
for tsunami victims.
